Optilayer barrier films for the poultry industry

  • Blog

At Oerlemans Plastics, the former sales team of Krehalon (3 account managers, 1 sales engineer and 1 prepress expert), became very successful in replacing the former Krehalon FormShrink business with the innovative Optilayer barrier films. Our Optilayer films are finding their way to many countries already.  Recently we realized succesfull projects in the United States, Chile, Argentina, Mexico, Poland, Norway, Germany, Montenegro and Italy. Our customers are mainly operating in the cheese-, red fresh meat-, processed meat- and poultry industry.

It is a great pleasure to give you the benefits of the printed Optilayer films we supply to the poultry industry.

Some facts and figures about the global broiler production:

More than 70 billion chickens are slaughtered each year globally, producing on/around 120 million tonnes of chicken meat. The broiler industry was valued at US$ 183 billion. The USA, China and Brazil are the biggest producers, accounting more than 40% of the global production. Global poultry meat consumption is more than 120 million tonnes, with the two largest consuming countries, China and USA, each accounting for around 16% of the total per capita consumption in the USA is four times that in China. Per capita supply has increased by 13% over the past decade globally, to around 16kg/cap/yr. This shows that poultry has quietly become the world’s most consumed meat, and the numbers behind its rise are remarkable.

Examples of Optilayer printed film successes

When looking at the Polish market as an example, we managed to deliver our printed Optilayer films to large super market chains as Dino, Lidl and Geronimo Martins. Our printed films are running on dedicated FormShrink machines. With the upcoming PPWR directive, where recyclability will be key and thinner is better, the following thicknesses are currently supplied by Oerlemans Plastics at this moment:

Top web              :               35 microns!
Bottom web      :               80 microns!

Oerlemans Plastics can supply a wide range of thicknesses and widths, so for all applications we have the right film to offer.
Despite the thin films (combination 35 microns and 80 microns), the printed retail packs have very strong seals and find their way through the distribution channel without any quality issues. Below some photos of our printed Optilayer films that shows the great presentation of the retail packs!

Because nowadays it is very hard to find skilled labourers, the global trend is to switch from (shrink) bags (very labour intensive) to film packaging. The advantages of deep draw are:

  • easy loading from above
  • robotic loading possible
  • loading, vacuuming, sealing and cutting in one operation
  • speed up to 10 cycles/min. x number of dies

In general deep drawing is the preferred system for larger packers. An annual usage of 1-2 million bags, in a small range of sizes, is a guide for the target market.

Last November, OPACKGROUP opened the OTC Test Centre with two professional factory testing machines for customer-focused testing of food packaging. Food producers can test new packaging in a practical manner outside their own production environment. The centre focuses on packaging with specific barrier properties like Optilayer form & shrink solutions and applications in flowvac, flowrap and deepdrawing, which must comply with the PPWR directive.

The OPACKGROUP, worldwide recognized as ´The Sustainable Innovator”, produces and supplies a full range of specialized, flexible films and packaging in paper and plastic variants. The group consists of seven manufacturers, ten production sites, independent research lab, in-home reprographics and more than 700 professionals with huge experience. Our goal is to unburden our customers in the food, non-food, retail, agriculture and horticulture industries; from design to packaging production and implementation!

Our customers from the poultry, meat, dairy, cheese, bake-off, and fish processing industries, among others, can be offered the opportunity to test new and more sustainable packaging solutions without disrupting their production process. A real game changer in the industrial packaging world!
