RETHINK AWARD RECYCLING FOR FARDEM PACKAGING

The Rethink Award 2025 in the Recycling category was won by Fardem Packaging (OPACKGROUP) with their recyclable gas barrier packaging for chilled chips. This innovative film offers the necessary puncture resistance without the use of nylon or polypropylene, making the packaging fully recyclable and compliant with future EU regulations. The award underlines the sustainable course of the OPACKGROUP, which, together with its subsidiaries, is committed to circular and future-proof packaging solutions.

The Rethink Award 2025 in the RECYCLING category has been awarded to the product innovation Recyclable gas barrier packaging for chilled chips by Fardem Packaging, a subsidiary of the OPACKGROUP.

The award symbolises the way in which OPACKGROUP, as the parent company, is working strategically with its seven production companies on the sustainability agenda. OPACKGROUP is convinced that innovation with recyclable gas barrier packaging is a prerequisite for the realisation of a circular economy. The manufacturer of flexible packaging and film is fully committed to sustainable product innovation, resulting in, among other things, this award-winning product.

Fresh chips are so sharp that they can easily pierce through the packaging film. That is why nylon (PA) and polypropylene (PP) are always used for packaging chips. The new multi-layer recyclable film from Fardem Packaging B.V. (OPACKGROUP) solves this problem without the addition of these polymers. The result is fully recyclable packaging with the right puncture resistance. Because only one polyolefin is used, customers can take full advantage of the discount based on Verpact’s rate differentiation. With this film, the company is ahead of the upcoming EU regulation on packaging and packaging waste (#PPWR), in which recyclability is an important element.

The jury has great respect for this commitment, which is why it has been awarded a prize, something we are naturally very proud of. Director of sister company Patrick Jansen: “This professional award is recognition for the developments we are making in the field of sustainable and recyclable packaging, of which this product is a very good example. Producing this high-quality film requires a lot of time, testing and application before you can realise this product together with external partners. We are therefore very pleased that we have succeeded and have the ambition to roll out this packaging product further!”

The other projects submitted, TopEmboss® Ultra from sister company Plasthill and Sustainable packaging for chips from Oerlemans Plastics (more information via this link to the product descriptions: Dutch Rethink Awards – OPACKGROUP), are examples of how OPACKGROUP believes in making its portfolio future-proof, together with its suppliers and customers.

Rethink Awards

The Rethink Awards are presented every two years to plastic and rubber products that best meet sustainability requirements. The jury recognises several important trends in the entries, focused on improving the social value of products and solving bottlenecks. The focus of companies is clearly on the use of recycled or biobased raw materials, redesigning products to make them more recyclable, and chain collaboration. The entries were assessed on the basis of five criteria: Renew (raw materials), Reduce (production and product), Redesign (design and use), Reuse (product reuse) and Recycle (collection and recycling).
